Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: A Look at the Features and Functionality

Aug 22, 2023Aug 22, 2023

Samsung’s latest foldable mobile device, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, has introduced some significant changes. The phone now boasts a fully flat silhouette, a redesigned hinge, and a larger display on the exterior. The exterior screen, known as the “Flex Window,” offers versatility with its smaller, glanceable display that fits well into shorter pockets or bags.

While the exterior screen allows for basic interactions such as accessing the calendar, checking the weather, and reading emails, its functionality is limited. Currently, users are restricted to a select few beta video and messaging applications, with the hope of expanding app availability in the future.

Samsung faces competition in the foldable market, as Motorola is set to release the Razr+ phone, which bears a striking resemblance to the Galaxy Z Flip. The Z Flip 5 does offer some unique features, including a Flex Mode setting that displays content on top and additional controls on the bottom when the phone is half-folded on a desk. Additionally, the exterior screen provides options for taking timed photos or handheld videos.

However, with a starting price of $1,000, some users may find it difficult to justify sacrificing a quality camera for the sake of a flexible screen. Despite this, the larger exterior screen of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers improved utility compared to its predecessor, providing users with immediate information through widgets such as the calendar, weather, and wellness trackers.

Though some popular widgets are missing from the launch, such as a photos widget, users can still access apps like Google Maps, Messenger, YouTube, and Netflix from the exterior screen. However, the limited app selection and glitches in video playback on the 3.4-inch screen may disappoint some users.

One standout feature of the Z Flip 5 is its flat hinge design, which allows for a smoother folding experience. While it may require two hands to unfold the device, this design ensures a more secure hinge, addressing issues that plagued previous Samsung foldables.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers an improved exterior screen experience, but its limited app selection and high price point may leave some wanting more functionality for their money.
